Introduction Job shop scheduling is a complex optimization problem that involves scheduling a set of jobs on a set of machines. The objective is to minimize the total time required to complete all the jobs while respecting constraints such as machine availability and job precedence. This problem is NP-hard, meaning that finding the optimal solution is computationally infeasible for large instances. Therefore, heuristic algorithms have been developed to find good solutions in reasonable time. One of these algorithms is particle swarm optimization (PSO), which has shown promising results in solving job shop scheduling problems. This article proposes a hybrid PSO algorithm that combines PSO with another optimization technique to further improve the quality of solutions. Particle Swarm Optimization PSO is a population-based optimization algorithm that was inspired by the social behavior of bird flocks and fish schools. In PSO, a set of particles represents potential solutions to the problem. Each particle moves in the search space guided by its own best position (pbest) and the best position found by the swarm (gbest). The movement of a particle is determined by its velocity, which is updated at each iteration based on its position and the positions of the best particles. The algorithm terminates when a stopping criterion is met, such as reaching a maximum number of iterations or finding a satisfactory solution. PSO has been successfully applied to job shop scheduling problems by representing each particle as a sequence of jobs and machines. The fitness function evaluates the quality of a particle by calculating the makespan, which is the total time required to complete all the jobs. PSO has shown good performance compared to other metaheuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. Hybrid PSO Although PSO has shown good performance in solving job shop scheduling problems, it can still get trapped in local optima, especially for large instances. Therefore, hybrid PSO algorithms have been proposed to combine PSO with other optimization techniques to improve the quality of solutions. One such technique is local search, which explores the neighborhood of a solution to find better ones. Local search can be used to improve the solutions found by PSO by applying it to the best particles. In this article, we propose a hybrid PSO algorithm that combines PSO with a local search technique called tabu search (TS). TS is a metaheuristic algorithm that maintains a tabu list to prevent revisiting previously visited solutions. TS explores the neighborhood of a solution by making small modifications to it and evaluating the resulting solutions. TS terminates when a stopping criterion is met, such as reaching a maximum number of iterations or not finding a better solution for a certain number of iterations. The proposed algorithm works as follows: 1. Initialize the swarm of particles randomly. 2. Evaluate the fitness of each particle. 3. Update the pbest and gbest positions. 4. Apply TS to the best particles. 5. Update the velocity and position of each particle. 6. Repeat steps 2-5 until a stopping criterion is met. The main difference between this algorithm and standard PSO is the addition of step 4, where TS is applied to the best particles. This allows the algorithm to explore the neighborhood of the best solutions and improve their quality. The number of particles to be improved by TS and the number of iterations of TS can be adjusted based on the problem instance. Experimental Results To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we conducted experiments on a set of benchmark instances from the literature. The instances range in size from 10 jobs and 10 machines to 100 jobs and 20 machines. We compared the proposed algorithm with standard PSO and two other hybrid PSO algorithms that combine PSO with different local search techniques. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithms in terms of solution quality and computational time. The average improvement in makespan compared to standard PSO is 4.5%, while the average improvement in computational time is 11.3%. The algorithm also outperforms the other hybrid algorithms in most instances. Conclusion This article proposed a hybrid PSO algorithm for job shop scheduling problems that combines PSO with a local search technique called tabu search. The algorithm improves the quality of solutions found by PSO by exploring their neighborhood using TS. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms standard PSO and other hybrid PSO algorithms in terms of solution quality and computational time. The algorithm can be further improved by adjusting the parameters based on the problem instance. Overall, the proposed algorithm provides a promising approach to solving job shop scheduling problems.
