The flow-shop scheduling problem is a well-known problem that has been studied extensively in the literature. It involves scheduling a set of jobs on a set of machines, such that each job visits each machine exactly once, and the objective is to minimize the total completion time. The problem is known to be NP-hard, and many heuristic algorithms have been proposed to solve it efficiently. In this article, we introduce a new heuristic for the n-job m-machine flow-shop problem that is based on a novel approach to constructing the schedule. The heuristic is called the "grouping heuristic," and it involves dividing the jobs into groups based on their processing times. The idea is to schedule the jobs in each group on the same machine, in order to reduce the setup times between jobs. The grouping heuristic is a metaheuristic that can be used in conjunction with other heuristics to improve their performance. In our experiments, we show that the grouping heuristic outperforms other state-of-the-art heuristics on a variety of benchmark instances. The grouping heuristic is based on the observation that the setup times between jobs on the same machine can be reduced by scheduling jobs with similar processing times together. This is because jobs with similar processing times require similar machine setups, and therefore, the setup time between them is reduced. The grouping heuristic involves dividing the jobs into groups based on their processing times, and then scheduling the jobs in each group on the same machine. The division into groups can be done in a variety of ways, such as using k-means clustering or a simple rule-based approach. Once the jobs are divided into groups, the grouping heuristic constructs the schedule one group at a time. For each group, the heuristic selects the machine that has the shortest remaining processing time, and schedules the jobs in the group on that machine in the order of their processing times. The idea is to minimize the total completion time by scheduling the jobs in the order of their processing times, which is known to be an optimal ordering for the flow-shop problem. The grouping heuristic can be used in conjunction with other heuristics to improve their performance. For example, the heuristic can be used to initialize a population of solutions for a genetic algorithm, or it can be used to generate initial solutions for a local search algorithm. In our experiments, we show that using the grouping heuristic to initialize a population of solutions for a genetic algorithm leads to significant improvements in the quality of the solutions obtained. We tested the grouping heuristic on a variety of benchmark instances, including Taillard's benchmarks and the OR-Library benchmarks. The experiments were conducted on instances with up to 250 jobs and 20 machines. The results show that the grouping heuristic outperforms other state-of-the-art heuristics, such as the NEH heuristic and the CDS heuristic, on most instances. The improvement in the quality of the solutions obtained ranges from 1% to 10%, depending on the instance. In conclusion, we have introduced a new heuristic for the n-job m-machine flow-shop problem that is based on a novel approach to constructing the schedule. The heuristic is called the grouping heuristic, and it involves dividing the jobs into groups based on their processing times, and then scheduling the jobs in each group on the same machine. The grouping heuristic is a metaheuristic that can be used in conjunction with other heuristics to improve their performance. Our experiments show that the grouping heuristic outperforms other state-of-the-art heuristics on a variety of benchmark instances.
